HOW WE CAME TO BE THE FREEST ON EARTH : SERIES 6

READ BELOW TO DIG DEEPER  INTO THE DATES THAT DEFINE OUR FREEDOM

1951: In 1951 a new constitution was declared for Sierra Leone by the governor, George Beresford-Stooke, and it was a major step toward self-governance.

1961: The independence movement in Sierra Leone began a decade earlier in the 1950s, when nationalist leaders such as Sir Milton Margai formed the Sierra Leone People’s Party and won Parliamentary elections, allowing them to begin talks with the British government for decolonization. On April 27, 1961, Sierra Leone finally gained its independence from the United Kingdom.

1964: Albert Michael Margai became Sierra Leone’s second prime minister following the death of his older brother, Sir Milton, on April 28, 1964. Like his brother, Albert was both the leader of the SLPP and the head of government.

1967: In elections held on 17 March 1967, the APC won by an extremely narrow margin, and Stevens was appointed Prime Minister, but he was overthrown only days after taking office, during a military coup.

1968: After a brief period of military rule, Stevens is recalled from exile in Guinea and re-assumed the post of Prime Minister on 26 April 1968, after another coup 13 months later.
