1884: After the partitioning of Africa in 1884, European powers began colonizing West Africa. They had no tolerance for strong rulers such as Touré and did not recognize his authority. When he refused to submit, they began military action. Described as African Napoleon, Samori Toure built a Muslim empire fighting off the French colonisation of West Africa in the 19th Century.
1896: On 31 August 1896, the hinterland of Sierra Leone became a British protectorate, thus creating the Sierra Leone Protectorate. The boundaries were demarcated with French Guinea and Liberia.
1898: The Hut Tax War of 1898 was a war against the imposition of the Hut Tax by the British Empire in Sierra Leone. It was initiated by Temne chief Bai Bureh in 1898, and later involved other native peoples, including the Mende. The war was an attempt by the local African kingdoms to maintain their independence in the face of Britain’s 1896 declaration of a protectorate over Sierra Leone.
1906: The school was founded in 1906 at the behest of the British colonial governor, Leslie Probyn, to educate the sons of Paramount Chiefs or nominees of Paramount Chiefs. The school later evolved to become a public school that is open to boys from all backgrounds.
1908/1909: On June 29th, 1909, Sierra Leone celebrated a significant milestone as their “14-years in the making” railway finally reached from Freetown to Pendembu, 227 miles east of the capital city.
